Falling Slowly, two-tone lace shawl

This is not a triangular shawl. It has no foam-stitch edging. But I love him with love. I’ve called it Falling Slowly and you can find the pattern on Ravelry or in the store.

This shawl is an ode to the cold, quiet, white days that winter is sometimes kind enough to grant us. Don’t you just love those quiet moments when nature is silent and all you can hear is the sound of your footsteps crunching in the snow? I do. In fact, I even wait for them all year round. If you could see me on snowy mornings, you’d think I’d completely lost my mind overnight (and that might turn out to be true-my brain seems to stop working the minute I see the slightest flake!).

The shawl starts at the center of the border and is knitted as a half-circle. Its double-throw pattern progresses along the body of the shawl, moving away from each other as the shawl grows. The pattern includes both written and diagrammed versions of the motifs, so you can choose the one that suits you best. Both versions have been tested so you can relax and enjoy knitting them while drinking your hot chocolate (yes, it’s a cliché but in my world, every snow day requires a cup of hot chocolate to be perfect).

The lace border is then knitted using German-style shortened rows. These shortened rows are easy to knit and almost invisible on jersey. This allows the border to blend into the body of the shawl. The pattern contains detailed instructions to teach you how to knit German-style shortened rows and double throws if you’ve never done it before. And this way, you’ll also have them if you’re not connected. If you’d like to see these techniques in action, take a look at my YouTube channel, where you’ll be able to watch both tutorials (very soon).

I chose to use two colors to highlight the border, but it’s absolutely unnecessary. Just before launching the test, I secretly hoped that one of my testers would knit it in a single color. I can’t wait to show you his version! In the meantime, if you like playing with color and want to grab one of the combinations we’ve created for you, you can find them on the Petit Bout de Laine boutique. In each combo, you’ll find two skeins of Petit Bout de Laine Sweet’Fing, its 100% merino twisted fingering base and a code for 20% off the pattern price. Then grab your 4 mm needles (US#6), two marker rings and you’re ready to start your Falling Slowly shawl!
